It’s the most wonderful time of the year – No, not holiday season (although I am ready to start putting Christmas decor up), it’s engagement season! Now is the time when friends and loved ones profess their love and start to plan their wedding together. It’s such an exciting time and one piece that you do not want to skip out on when wedding planning is setting time aside to get those engagement photos done.
I know most people do not enjoy getting their picture taken or find it very uncomfortable, but I wanted to share a few reasons why I think engagement photos are important, fun and critical if you want gorgeous wedding day portraits!
We are all awkward in front of the camera. If you missed my confession a few weeks ago on Instagram, I am exhibit A for awkward in front of the camera (and I even know the best poses!). But, it doesn’t diminish the fact that it’s hard to be natural when a camera is in your face. I think we all have horrid memories of senior portraits in the gymnasium at high school where you had to be perfectly placed, no hand out of place (just me?). Taking the time to have engagement photos means you will be more comfortable in front of the camera come wedding day, and even more comfortable with your photographer! This is the time to be awkward, and for me to help you learn how to be natural, laugh and have a great time getting your pictures done so you are that much more ready on your big day. And you actually realize you are very photogenic!
It’s not every day you get engaged. This is YOUR time to be a couple, embrace your love for each other and celebrate your new commitment! If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that wedding planning can become all consuming and stressful. Take the time to remember why you are going through and picking out placemats and florals, it’s because you want to celebrate your love for one another. One of the best ways to do that is by taking an hour one evening and getting gorgeous engagement photos done – then go on a date night because heck, you’re dressed up anyways!
Get to know your photographer. Every wedding photographer is different and it’s important to find someone that meshes well with both of you, as this is an important day and you want someone you trust to capture it. Having the opportunity to work with your wedding photographer before the big day will only make us become even closer and (obviously) BFFs.
There are at least a thousand more reasons why engagement photos are recommended, but these are my top 3 for any newly engaged couple. Let’s take some time and truly celebrate the two of you, I promise to make you laugh, we’ll have a ton of fun, and you’ll get beautiful images of the two of you together during this wonderful season of life.
